Internal Family Systems (IFS) in New Zealand
IFS explores the different "parts" of yourself to promote inner harmony and healing.
What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a powerful, non-pathologising approach that views the mind as made up of multiple sub-personalities or 'parts', each with their own perspectives, feelings, and roles. Developed by Dr Richard Schwartz, IFS helps people understand and heal the inner conflicts that drive difficult emotions and behaviours. At the heart of IFS is the belief that everyone has a 'Self' — a core of calm, compassion, and wisdom — that can help heal wounded parts of the psyche. IFS is particularly effective for trauma, but is also used for anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties.
What to expect in sessions
In IFS sessions, you'll be gently guided to become curious about different 'parts' of yourself — the inner critic, the protector, the vulnerable child, and others. Rather than fighting these parts, you'll learn to understand their intentions and help them find healthier roles. Sessions often involve internal dialogue, imagery, and a deep sense of compassionate curiosity toward yourself.
